Clayton unbeaten on 99 as Queensland-Victoria Shield clash hangs in balance
Day two of the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and Victoria at the Gabba ended with the game finely balanced. Queensland reached 5-202 at stumps in reply to Victoria’s 307, still 105 runs behind. Jack Clayton was unbeaten on 99, with Hayden Kerr not out on 14. Clayton faced 191 balls and hit eight fours, holding the innings together after early wickets. His fourth half-century across the Shield and one-day competitions this season underlined his form, but he will resume on day three one run short of a century.
Victoria resumed on 9-282 and were bowled out for 307. Mitch Swepson dismissed Matt Hennig for four to take his second wicket, while Will Sutherland remained unbeaten on 43. Cameron Gannon finished with 5-66 and Jem Ryan took three wickets. Queensland’s reply began badly when Sutherland bowled Hugh Weibgen with his first delivery and had Hugo Burdon caught by Marcus Harris at third slip later in the same over, leaving the hosts 2-33. Clayton and Angus Lovell rebuilt with an 85-run stand for the third wicket. Lovell made 36 before Hennig trapped him lbw with his first ball in Shield cricket. Two overs later, Liam Blackford took a sharp bat-pad catch off Hennig to dismiss Lachlan Hearne for two. When Jimmy Peirson skied Todd Murphy to Sutherland at mid-wicket, Queensland slipped to 5-174. Clayton and Kerr then survived until stumps, making the first session on day three crucial. Victoria will target Clayton early, while Queensland will hope their set batter can complete a century and push the team towards a first-innings lead.
